The Fear In American Politics
Fear is driving American politics, and it will shake up Washington. Polling suggests Americans are afraid the economy will crash and things in Ukraine are a threat to America. Fear isn’t coming out of thin air. We live in times of war, inflation, sickness, and environmental challenges. But fear won’t solve anything and can cause even more problems in America than we already have.
Division at home
Historically, when the American people are afraid, they vote out the party in charge. Right now, Democrats control the White House and have a slim majority in Congress. And really, most people aren’t very political. Even though the last decade has been full of pent-up emotion, most people don’t want to be thinking about politics all the time. They’re not super partisan, and they don’t care about the nonstop political reality show on cable news. The basics are simple: enough money to cover your bills and a safe place to call home.
Economic issues in America
Voters have been more worried about their economic situation since 2008. The number of Americans saying their finances are worse now than four years ago rose to its highest level. And their fear is well-founded. Supply chain issues, interest hikes, and inflation have devalued the dollar and raised the cost of goods.
People are getting less out of their dollars and spending more of it to make ends meet. Fear of not being able to afford a living in America will likely have repercussions in the world of politics. People will use their vote to express dissatisfaction with how things are going. There’s no telling whether things will improve under new leadership, but people will vote and hope for the best.
Trouble overseas
The economy’s recovery has been slow, and there are concerns that a problem overseas will lead to more significant trouble at home. The war in Ukraine has caused reactions worldwide and is already impacting countries outside the conflict. A weakening of international economies could mean that American investors lose interest in sending capital overseas, which would have a ripple effect on economic health across many countries.
Failing economies could lead to greater instability worldwide, which would also impact the United States. More importantly, there is how involved the United States will get with the war in Ukraine. The American Government has enforced sanctions on Russia for its aggression, but many still wonder whether that will be its end. And the sanctions on Russia have also impacted the lives of American citizens, feeding uncertainty about the future.
Environmental challenges in America
The average temperature of our planet is rising, and climate change is a global concern. Tackling it requires money, time, and innovation – all things politicians don’t have much of right now. A considerable part of the issue, as scientists keep warning, is we won’t see the effects until it’s too late. We already see environmental impact products, like weird weather, but they aren’t impacting people’s livelihoods the way other issues are.
Still, the American people’s fear of environmental politics is also divided. Many, including corporations, are afraid they won’t be able to afford a switch to environmentally friendly technology. Others fear it’s already too late to address climate issues, and the government isn’t doing enough to prevent further damage.
